Hosted by the Intermountain Bird Observatory
Have you always wanted to visit our Lucky Peak banding station, but didn’t have a 4-wheel-drive vehicle? Have you recently heard about IBO and want to learn more? Here’s the perfect chance to come check us out! All transportation is provided. These are great trips for Lucky Peak "First Timers".
What’s so special about these trips? These trips are a chance to drive to Lucky Peak for folks who don’t have a vehicle to get there on their own. They are a great introduction to Lucky Peak and the Intermountain Bird Observatory for those who know little about us. You’ll learn the basics about our project, meet our crew, and get to hold and release wild birds!
Transportation: Boise State University’s Intermountain Bird Observatory will provide two 12-passenger vans for each field trip. Limited space available, about 24 per trip.
How to attend? To attend, you and your family and friends need to register with us. Seats are given on a first-come-first-serve basis, and there will be a waiting list in case a seat opens up. To book, please CLICK HERE to fill out an Eventbrite registration form. You must book in advance and receive confirmation to attend. For more information contact our Education and Outreach Director, Heidi: HeidiWare@boisestate.edu.
Timing: Trips will depart around 8 am. We will return from the peak no later than 3:30 pm the same day.
What to Expect: You will observe and participate in songbird mist netting, raptor migration count, and raptor banding. You will experience breath-taking scenery during the most beautiful time of year in southern Idaho. Weather could be very warm, cool, or downright chilly! Please dress and pack accordingly. Check the weather forecast for Lucky Peak here.
What You Will Do: You will observe IBO staff capture and band birds and count migrating raptors. You will observe these activities, release wild birds, and learn about bird migration, their habitat, and conservation issues.
Significance: This is a great wholesome family activity that is a unique blend of science, nature, and education. This is a super way to introduce children to the outdoors and nature, or to fuel their interest in nature and animals.
What should you bring: Wear appropriate layered clothing so you are prepared for warmer or cooler temperatures, including hats and sunscreen. Wear appropriate footwear for hiking and uneven terrain. Bring your binoculars, bird book, camera or video recorders. Bring your lunch, snacks, and hot or cold beverages. Bring enough to share some with IBO crews!
Cost: $5.00 The small trip fee will help cover gas and trip-related expenses. However, you may decide to bring some cash to make a donation to the IBO or to purchase IBO merchandise. Thank you!
Cancellation: Please let us know ASAP if you have booked but cannot make it. There will be a waiting list for these trips, so please be considerate and show up if you have reserved a spot, or let us know early enough so we can contact someone else on the waiting list.
Refunds: Refunds will be made up until the week before the event. Cancellations made the week of the event may not be refunded.
What if you can’t come on any of these dates, but would still like to visit Lucky Peak? The good news is, our field station is open to the public any day we are in operation (July 16th-Oct 30th, weather permitting). You may drive, hike, or bike to our site and visit us and the birds. If you can provide your own transportation to our site, this is a good option.
